2nd International Symposium on Deep Resources Engineering & 2nd Editorial Board Meeting
Concluded Successfully
From May 31 to June 2, the "2nd International Symposium on Deep Resources Engineering (ISDRE) & 2nd Editorial Board Members Meeting" was successfully held, jointly co-hosted by Northeastern University and the Nonferrous Metals Society of China, and co-organized by the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Deep Metal Mining and Equipment and the Editorial Office of Deep Resources Engineering (DRE). Featuring one main venue and four parallel sessions, attracting more than 200 experts and scholars from home and abroad.

The opening ceremony of the symposium was grandly held at the International Academic Exchange Center on the morning of June 1. It was presided over by Prof. Zaobao Liu, executive deputy director of the Institute of Deep Engineering and Intelligent Technology of Northeastern University and managing editor of DRE. Prof. Xia-Ting Feng, President of Northeastern University and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a welcome speech and extended a warm welcome to all the guests. He emphasized the importance of deep resources engineering in national strategies and global sustainable development, and expressed the expectation that the symposium would facilitate more international cooperation and the emergence of innovative achievements. Prof. Seokwon Jeon (Seoul National University, South Korea), President of the International Society of Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, spoke highly of the academic value of the symposium and put forward prospects for the future development of deep resources engineering. Prof. Xia-Ting Feng and Prof. Seokwon Jeon, Editors-in-Chief of DRE, jointly issued honorary certificates to the Outstanding Reviewers and Outstanding Young Editorial Boards Members of 2024, recognizing their outstanding contributions to the development of DRE.

During the symposium, academicians, experts and scholars from home and abroad conducted in-depth discussions on cutting-edge issues of deep resources engineering at main venue. Thirteen well-known scholars delivered keynote reports, covering a wide range of important fields such as deep rock mechanics, energy exploitation, and engineering safety. The speakers included:

· Prof. Derek Elsworth from Pennsylvania State University, USA
· Prof. Qinhong Hu from China University of Petroleum (East China), China
· Prof. Li Li from École Polytechnique de Montréal, Canada
· Prof. Stephan Matthai from the University of Melbourne, Australia
· Prof. Zhejun Pan from Northeast Petroleum University, China
· Assoc. Prof. Wei Wu from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
· Prof. Wei Victor Liu from the University of Alberta, Canada

The symposium set up four parallel sessions, namely "Deep Rock Mechanics Session", "Deep Metal Mining Session", "Deep Energy Mining and Storage Session" and "Deep Engineering Safety Session". A total of 50 academic reports were delivered in these parallel sessions. Attending scholars held in-depth discussions on hot issues of deep resources engineering, with frequent on-site interactions and a vibrant academic atmosphere. Based on the performance of presentations in the parallel sessions, the symposium selected 8 Outstanding Presenters.

The closing ceremony of the symposium was held on June 2, which was hosted and summarized by Prof. Lin Chen, form the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Deep Metal Mining and Equipment, Northeastern University. Prof. Lin Chen stated that the symposium brought together top scholars in the field of deep resources engineering around the world. Through keynote reports, parallels session discussions and Editorial Board Meetings, it provided participants with a high-level academic exchange platform. He announced that the 3rd ISDRE will be held in 2027, and sincerely invited all experts and scholars constantly pay attention to the DRE and the series of activities of the ISDRE, jointly promoting scientific and technological innovation and development in the field of deep resources engineering.

It is reported that on the evening of May 31, the 2nd Editorial Board Meeting of DRE was held at the International Academic Exchange Center of Northeastern University. The conference was hosted by Prof. Xia-Ting Feng and Prof. Seokwon Jeon, Editors-in-Chief of DRE. The meeting brought together editorial board experts from all over the world in a hybrid online and offline format to discuss the development strategy of the journal.
