The conference was hosted by Lei Sun, Vice President of Northeastern University.

Academician Xia-Ting Feng extended a warm welcome to experts and scholars. He stated that the establishment of DRE is a concrete measure to thoroughly implement General Secretary Jinping Xi's important instructions on running first-class academic journals. Against the background of the rapid development of science and technology in the field of deep engineering, the journal focuses on the display and dissemination of research achievements in the exploration and mining of deep metal mines, and is committed to serving the theoretical innovation and development across interdisciplinary fields including geology, rock mechanics, safety, equipment, information, and intelligence. It is believed that under the leadership of Honorary Editor-in-Chief Academician Qihu Qian and with the guidance of all academicians and experts, DRE will undoubtedly achieve high-quality development at an early date.

Academician Qihu Qian extended his congratulations on the founding of Deep Resources Engineering journal and the holding of the 2023 International Forum on Deep Resources Engineering. He pointed out that China currently faces high external dependence on mineral resources. In response, deep engineering projects are probing to ever greater depths, giving rise to a host of scientific issues. Therefore, the launch of DRE is both highly necessary and urgent. DRE should avoid homogenization, maintain distinct research characteristics at all times, and strive to develop itself into a high-quality interdisciplinary journal integrating deep resources exploration, development, equipment and rock mechanics.

Prof. Huanzhi Gao said that the Nonferrous Metals Society of China has been actively responding to General Secretary Jinping Xi's call for "writing research papers on China's soil". She hopes to take this opportunity to collaborate with Northeastern University to develop DRE into a world-leading journal, striving to be at the forefront of the world. As one of the sponsors of DRE, the Society will exert its full efforts to offer a better academic exchange platform for scientific and technological workers.

Prof. Seokwon Jeon said that the scientific research challenges in the field of deep engineering are complex and accompanied by severe difficulties. Against this backdrop, the launch of DRE is highly timely, which will facilitate academic exchanges and cooperation in scientific research. The editorial board of DRE is composed of world-leading experts in the field. He expressed confidence that with the joint efforts of all parties, DRE will evolve into a high-quality academic publication.

All the distinguished guests present at the conference witnessed the journal's launch ceremony, and Prof. Xia-Ting Feng, Editor-in-Chief of the journal, and Prof. Seokwon Jeon jointly unveiled the editorial office.

During the session of the International Symposium on Deep Resources Engineering and the Centennial Anniversary Lecture Series, Academician Qihu Qian delivered an inspiring speech themed Building a Strong Country in Science and Technology Urgently Needs the Spirit of Scientists. He encouraged young scientific and technological workers to inherit, carry forward and practice the spirit of scientists, integrate their personal ideals with the major national needs, bravely act as pioneers in emerging and interdisciplinary fields, take on the role of leaders in key scientific and technological areas, and make greater contributions to embarking on a great new journey.

Seven distinguished scholars, including Academician Mingyang Wang (Army Engineering University) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Academician Jun Lin (Jilin University) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Academician Seokwon Jeon (Seoul National University) of the Korean National Academy of Engineering, Academician Charlie Chunlin Li (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) of the Norwegian Academy of Engineering and Technology, Prof. Jian-Fu Shao (University of Lille, France), Prof. Xiaoping Zhou (Chongqing University), and Prof. Feng Dai (Sichuan University), delivered academic reports respectively, titled: New Progress in Deep Rock Mechanics Research, Solving the Problems of Deep Underground Exploration by Innovations in Geophysical Exploration Equipment Technology, Frontier of Rock Breaking and Excavation Technology, Fracture Characteristics of Explosive Rocks and Rockburst Energy Conversion Model, Research on Rock Mechanics Problems Related to Deep Geological Disposal of Nuclear Waste, Field Enrichment Finite Element Method, and Progressive Fracture Mechanism of Engineering Rock Mass Dynamic Disasters: New Progress and Engineering Applications. They jointly discussed cutting-edge science and technology, as well as challenges and opportunities in the field of deep resources engineering, sharing forward-looking concepts and exchanging academic ideas.
The Symposium was summarized by Prof. Zaobao Liu, Executive Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education for Safe Mining of Deep Metal Mines. He sincerely invited all academicians and experts to continue paying attention to DRE journal and the series of activities of ISDRE, and to jointly discuss the grand plan for technological innovation and development in the field of deep resources engineering.

On May 30, the First Editorial Board Meeting of Deep Resources Engineering journal was held in Conference Room 407 of the International Academic Exchange Center of Northeastern University. Members of the journal's editorial board attended the meeting in a combined online and offline format. The meeting was hosted by Xia-Ting Feng and Seokwon Jeon, Editors-in-Chief of DRE.
Prof. Lin Chen, the Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education for Safe Mining of Deep Metal Mines, introduced the background of DRE's founding, elaborated on its development orientation and the disciplinary fields it covers, presented the structure of the editorial board and the composition of the editorial office staff, and reported on the current progress of work.
