Prof. Qiuming Gong received his Ph.D. degree from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, in 2006, a Masters degree from the Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), in 1995, and a Bachelors degree from Xian College of Geology (now part of Chang’an University) in 1992. From 1995–2001, he worked at the Beijing Institute of Geo-Engineering Exploration & Surveying (BIGE). Between 2005 and 2006, he served as a Project Officer at the Protection Engineering Research Centre (PERC), NTU, conducting research on tunnel excavation. Since late 2006, he has been affiliated with the College of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Beijing University of Technology, where he holds the positions of Associate Researcher and later Professor. In 2006 and 2011, he was invited as a Visiting Scientist and later as a Visiting Professor to the Laboratoire de Mécanique des Roches (LMR) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). Prof. Gong specializes in geotechnical and tunnel engineering. He serves as an Editorial Board Member for the international journal Tunneling and Underground Space Technology and holds council memberships in several committees of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME). He authored and co-authored four monographs and holds more than 50 national invention and utility model patents. He has published over 100 academic papers, including more than 50 international journals, and his work has garnered over 3000 SCI citations.
